Everything from start to finish was as good as it could be. Starting with making the appointment with Jennifer. When I got to the facility everyone was extremely helpful and patient, even though they were all dealing with new protocols because of Covid-19. I don't remember all the nurses names but Olivia and the first prep nurse I saw tried hard to keep me calm (I do suffer from white coat syndrome). Doctor Yu was clear and calming in expaining the process. I had not met him, but I'm so happy that my primary physician (Dr. Cao) refered me to him. Everything went fine the day of the procedure. The staff was very helpful. No complaints.But, my pre procedure experience at Hoag Urgent Care in Huntington Beach was horrible. No one told me that I had to bring my doctor orders for my COV19 test. Who needs paperwork when everything should be computerized these days? I was told that Hoag's Urgent Care computers aren't on the same system as Hoag hospital. How could that be possible? That is the most insane thing I have heard. On top of that, my GI doctor's office, who ordered the test, is in the same building as Hoag Urgent Care Huntington Beach. Yet, I was told I had to go home and get the paperwork in order to have my COV19 test. BEYOND RIDICULOUS! They could have walked up 2 flights of stairs and asked for the paperwork. That didn't happen. I had my husband bring the paperwork to me. And, the tech who took my vitals did not wash her hands or neither did the PA who did the COV 19 test, even after I mentioned it to her. NOW, why wouldn't you wash their hands after every single patient in this environment? Her response was, "We have the alcohol hand cleaner." I told her that it was NOT as effective as hand washing. Still, she didn't offer to wash her hands! It borders on malpractice that the Hoag staff at the Hoag Urgent Care in Huntington Beach could possibly be spreading COV19. I found the entire experience horrific. I won't be returning to Hoag Urgent Care if at all possible. - R.H

My only suggestion is have Michelle at office scheduling speak with Dr. Yu's head nurse on timing of prep.I called Michele 72 hours prior to procedure and let her know finishing prep between 9pm and 10pm will not work. I want to sleep.She suggested in a caring way to move up start time from 4pm to 3pm. I did. It made no difference. When you are up till 12 midnight at 2am at 4am you become concerned will I ever stop before this procedure. One less concern a patient needs.Then post procedure, Dr. Yu' head nurse shared a good number of patients don't sleep thru night. And that she tells her husband to start prep in the morning. She said a morning start time allows him to sleep. Wish I was told this.Otherwise very pleased with Dr. Yu and his team.Hope this helps you and more importantly other patients.Joe - J.P

The 2 items that could improve my overall experience are:1. The iv insertion was painful due to multiple times (3 times) needed for success. The 1st uncessful insertion had blood coming out onto my arm.2. My head hurts and was very sleepy after awoke from procedure. Not sure was this due to the pain med and the amount of anesthesia given. 2 weeks ago on 12/3/2019 I had a similar procedure I was awakened without these symptoms. I had the feeling of being rushed to leave the recovery room by the nurse even though eyes were closed and can hardly stand up. After getting home, continued to sleep until 6 pm. - J.W

The check-in process was on time, and the front staff person was pleasant and very helpful. One individual (I wish I remembered her name!) went way above and beyond the call of duty to arrange for my return ride home after my procedure, making sure all the avenues through the mire of insurance requirements were met. Prep instructions were very good, but I do have some suggested feedback that I received from friends that really helped: 1) Apply vaseline or aquafor after every single bowel movement to prevent chafing and any burning pain on the many subsequent bowel movements, and 2) This one's for the guys....after taking Suprep/laxative be on the safe side and sit down on the toilet every time you go to the bathroom even if you think you only have to urinate...this prevents any mishaps if you're standing up when you "think" you only have to pee. - L.B

Where can I start? I must admit I was hesitant in obtaining this procedure. But after completion I felt this was one of the best procedures I've had.When I arrived at the center I was told where to go. I was given the four pages to sign and I was done. Shortly thereafter went to the room for the procedures to start. Before I knew it the procedures were finished.I was expecting possible pain or soreness afterwords but no such thing. I felt 100%'The whole process including the facility, the administrative and medical staff, and Dr Yu were professional.I gave all facets of this rating 5 stars. In addition, I think it's very expedient to be able to fill out the ONE MEDICAL PASSPORT in advance. This saved so much time in filling out the necessary medical information and I think more accurately. The only issue, now that i think about it might be, will I be notified of the results from any biopsies that were taken? Or do I need to call someone? Or was it written on a form somewhere? If it was verbally told to me I don't remember. - J.K

My colonoscopy went well and I didn’t feel or hear anything. I was a little nervous before but as soon I came into the room I was ok. Music was playing and the light was down made me feel relaxed. During the set up, I felt like it was being rushed to make up for being behind. Not a good feeling going into surgery, as a patient. Reese and Kelly were fantastic, as well as the others that worked on me, including the one the placed the IV (but I can't remember her name) and an additional nurse in the procedure room. Colonoscopy procedure was not a problem however, the welt and black & blue area (approx 3" long x 2" wide) on the top of my right hand where IV needle was so ineptly inserted is an entirely different story! I undergo blood tests for my RA medication every 2-3 months for the past 3 years. I know very well that this is completely unnecessary when needles are inserted correctly. My hand required 3 days of icing to reduce swelling of welt and I continue to treat the black & blue area 6 days after the assault. I am understandably quite unhappy. I respectfully recommend that staff attend a retraining program for non harmful needle insertion. - V.S

Everybody starting with the front desk were very kind and efficient. My first nurse was Haylee ( I hope I am spelling it correctly) who was very professional, caring and a good communicator. She did my IV and I didn’t feel any pain. All the other nurses were excellent too. Dr. Jen, the anesthesiologist, was kind and reassuring. Then Dr. Yu who came highly recommended by many people, talked to me before the procedure and explained the steps. After the procedure, they allowed me to come out of the anesthesia on my own timing. At any given time, I never felt that anyone was rushing me at all. Dr. Yu came to see me before I left the clinic. He went over the pictures taken during the procedure and the results with me. I was impressed by the care and friendliness of the nurses. They did a great job getting me prepared, being willing to help me whenever I needed help. I was surprised that the anesthetic they gave me knocked me out so completely and so quickly, that I never was even aware of what was going on — which was great! The nurse who put the tube into my vein was extremely skillful! Usually nurses have problems and I am left with large bruises on my hand for weeks afterwards. She did it so well that I can't even see where the needle went in! I appreciate Dr. Yu's report to me afterwards and the fact that the nurses gave me copies of the printout so I can share it with my daughter and son who are very caring and supportive. All in all, I was very impressed with the service I was given; but, I sure hope I don't have to go through it again any time soon. That prep is no fun!I was not able to change the form that say's I Don't Know. I do know and I do rate each of the areas as EXCELLENT! - N.K

Everything was excellent except for the wait time. I reported as scheduled at 11:00AM for a 12:00PM procedure. I sat in the lobby for 20-25 minutes before I was "checked in" to give id's and sign paperwork. I believe I was taken back tp prepare for the procedure around 11:45. The admitting nurse and other medical staff were attentive, courteous, and helpful. I was informed Dr. Yu was delayed and my procedure would be also. I was prepped and kept in the pre-op and recovery room until the procedure which was about at 1:00PM. The staff kept me comfortable and informed during the wait. I understand there are delays and view the extended wait time as an anomaly. Dr. Yu, the anesthesiologist, and nurses were great. Was notified late afternoon the night before the procedure that my appointment had been moved up 1 & 1/2 hours earlier. When I tried to talk with the doctor's office to let them know I couldn't make the new appointment time there was no one available that could address my scheduling conflict (until an hour after I was suppose to start my preparation procedure). After several calls back and forth I was given my original appointment time again. Some back ground informtion:Every call to make schedule arrangements had been made directly with me on my cell phone - when I ask how did the schedule get changed at such a late notice - I was told that someone had call my wife and she approvded the change a couple days earlier - my wife never talked with anyone and when we check her phone only one miss call came from the doctor's office had ever been made to my wife (and no message was left). Since all calls had been made to me (even the late call from the hospital) it was very strange that the only call that "approved" an appointment change suddenly was made to my wife? - R.N

My first meeting with Dr. Yu occurred because of an emergency situation that I was in when I checked into Hoag Newport as an in-patient on July 1, 2014. The dear Lord was looking over me to have Dr. Yu randomly assigned to me when I was admitted to said hospital. After the operation, Dr Yu did not come to see me and explain every thing. The nurse tod is go home and the doctor will call you, but the doctor never call. I had diaries all Friday, Saturday and still today too and I was scare because what I heard last year about patients died from bacteria after operation. I called on call doctor who said it takes 2 days but now it is 3 days!! I did same operation before and I never had diaries!!! - R.J

I'm pleased that I chose to have my procedure with Dr. Yu done at your terrific facility. However, I was originally asked to arrive at 6:30 a.m. but the time was moved back to 6:15 a.m. I arrived promptly and tookabout l0 minutes to check in. I was taken back and prepared with a gown and I.V. and laid on the gurney for about 40 minutes.In the middle of the procedure, I awakened in some pain and listened to the anesthesiologist talking about something unrelatedto what we were doing. After a few minutes I spoke up and informed him that I was awake and really hurting. I believehe should have been paying more attention to his patient than to some other issue. In addition, the anesthesiologist waspoorly groomed with long, straggly hair and beard which did not seem appropriate for an operating room. - R.

I had my first consulting visit from Dr. Victor Yu on March 13, 2018. Dr. Yu showed a lot of care and respect for me as a patient. He explained carefully what he needed to do to determine issues with the current medical problems that I was experiencing. The procedures were performed on April 11. The staff members who took care for me from the front desk to the nurse who took me into the procedure prep room and who prepped me for the procedures were extremely nice and professional.I was then wheeled into the procedure room where about 5 members including Dr. Yu and anesthesiologist took care of me. Before I knew it, the procedures were over with no after affect of anesthesia. I loved the fact that every single step was explained to me prior to application. Dr. Victor Yu evaluated me for bile duct dysfunction-he was very friendly and explained his findings and subsequent treatment plan very clearly and concisely to where a layperson could understand medical terminology and physiology. The office was very quick with getting me scheduled for an MRCP, EUS, and ERCP with sphincterotomy, all on a stat basis. Specifically, Tiffany with the Hoag main scheduling department was very efficient at telling me what to do to get the authorization for the MRCP appointment as expedited as possible. When I went to a follow up regarding the results of my EUS (which showed that everything was structurally normal), I was having pain so severe that I had to go to urgent care. He then met with the doctor who performed my EUS's senior partner (the original doctor was out) to carefully look through the results and personally call me back the next day with the next step in my treatment plan. Finally, for the ERCP with sphincterotomy, he took great care of me before, during, and after the procedure. Overall, I'm very pleased with the Hoag Health network as every experience at one of their facilities has been exceptional. - M.K

The home Cologaurd test seems to have a high false positive nature. The results were explained to me and I was given 2 copies, one for me and one for my primary care physician, Dr. Tsai. And the exit from the hospital was seamless. I feel great, just home taking it easy for the rest of the day. No side affects or discomfort. Overall a great experience. I know how important it is to have these procedures and am hopeful the biopsy results from the endoscopy turn out well. Thank you guys for a great procedure. The prep packet worked great (in the past it was very difficult for me to drink). My only issue was that I was originally booked at a surgical center that was not contracted with my insurance. Per my understanding, this was done by accident (no harm, no foul). However the surgical center (that was out of network) was trying to convince me to stay with them when I mentioned I needed to find a location that was in-network. Had I listened to them I would have paid an extra $400. Luckily I spoke to your staff (Michelle was amazing), and I got booked to the right center that was contracted with my insurance. This was certainly a lesson learned from my end to always double-check, but I would hope the person responsible for the booking would be more careful next time. Overall experience was great. I had to wait 44 min after being prepped which wasn’t the best. Dr Yu briefed me post procedure, although I just woke up so I was too groggy to understand nor remember anything he said. I would have given the STAFF a five star had it not been for the nurse who called me from the waiting room to the back. She was abrupt and very rushed. She never introduced herself and had no name tag, so I cannot say who she was. She did not smile once and barely gave me the opportunity to answer a question before asking the next one. I had forgotten to take my watch off before leaving for my appointment, and and had actually forgotten I was even wearing it. When she saw it on my arm she had a slight fit. I tried to calm her down and told her not to worry, she could bring it to my husband who was waiting in the waiting room. She stood over me with her hand extended in an angry manner as I hurriedly fumbled to take my watch off to give to her. Very rude... Everyone else was exceptionally nice and extremely courteous with wonderful bedside manners, including Dr. Yu and the anesthesiologist, Dr. Barns. A special thanks to Yoko, who was so nice and helped to make me feel at ease and started my I.V. with no problem. I didn't even feel the stick. Thank you! - D.G

Outstanding except scheduling. I selected a date for the procedure so that I could arrange a ride home. I waited extra time to ensure a 7:00 procedure on Thursday so my girlfriend could drive me home after. Two days before the procedure, the time was changed to 7:30 without confirming with me. I called your office and was told it was pushed out because an anesthesiologist was not available. I later found out this was a lie. Dr. Yu was in surgery with another patient at 7:00 under anesthesia. As a result, my girlfriend was a half hour late to work. It is better to be honest than caught in a lie by the individual doing the scheduling. Dr and staff were great otherwise. Nurse confirmed that another patient had been moved into my spot accidentally. This has no reflection on the doctor or anesthesiologist. They were incredible - D.R

Everything went great with my procedure today. The RN (forgot her name) that checked me in and wheeled me to our car was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The only cons was the young lady that wheeled me in to the hallway outside the operating room was busy talking to another staff and barely noticed me and roughly bumped the wheel on the wall. I arrived promptly at 8am, was processed quickly, and was in for prepping by 8:40am. Staff were relaxed and welcoming. It was a casual but professional atmosphere throughout. The nurse permitted my son to sit with me while I waited for the procedure. After I was wheeled into the procedure room, I was put under without notice, which was fine with me, and I was awakened an hour or so later in the recovery room with my son sitting by my side. The nurses, anesthesiologist, Dr. Yu, and reception staff were all quite excellent. I felt no pain or discomfort at any time prior to, during, or following the procedure. The documentation I received was fairly straightforward (I needed to look up some of the terminology), and I look forward to the final results. Reception followed up with me by phone the next day. I am not happy to have to have these procedures, but if I have to have them, I am grateful for the way in which this one was conducted. - R.WILDER
