Kyla Ryan PA is the best., he goes above and beyond!The male nurse I think his name is Mike who helped take off and put on a new splint was very kind and caring. Some of the staff just came in and did what they needed to do. If you have a new nurse with you it helps to explain to them what to do not just do it. I am not sure why myself has to move more or change my position to be worked on just because you as the staff members chair won’t adjust. You adjust. Please use sanitary hand sanitizer when coming into the room and leaving too. We watch even if you don’t think we are. - K.R

The staff were all very friendly. They explained in detail what would be happening. They also helped calm my nerves. I remember waking up in the recovery room, and the sweetest nurse fed me ice chips. I was then transferred to a different room while I waited to be discharged. My medication was delivered to me before I even left, so I didn't have to go out to a store and pick it up. Also, my assigned nurse was honestly the sweetest. She kept going out and getting me pudding cups, granola bars, and more ice chips. She even came back with socks big enough to cover my huge cast, which was a blessing because it's winter. My overall experience was amazing. I highly recommend. - B.S

I think Dr Scherb is a very competent Ortho. Sometimes we patience want are illnesses to hurry up and heal, but sometimes that's not possible or practical. I am doing everything that I was told to do and my foot does feel some better, however I know it's going to take a long time to heal up because of my diabetes. My physician, Dr Bryon Carlson, suggested on September 12, referred me to Dr Scherb. Dr Carlson's nurse called Mason City and set up the appointment. I was surprised it was on Friday. I expected a longer wait. We arrived prior to our appointment, checked in quickly, and waited to be called. I was accompanied to a room and the nurse asked me questions and wanted to know my questions. That took about 5 minutes and then she said Dr Scherb would be in soon. When Dr Scherb arrived, he introduced himself to my wife and me. He then asked me questions about why I was there and where my pain was. He looked at the x-rays, and then did some mobility tests. He then explained what he thought was the problem, talked about options, and then referred me to Neurology. He explained why and ordered an MRI. His nurse set up the appointment with Neurology and he wished me well and left. I felt he was personable and efficient. - T.P

i always have a great time with xray before and appointment after. My questions are answered and my treatment easy to follow and using the portal program makes it easy to see my next appointment and each time i have visited. I used the great valet service at the main hospital lobby. They park m y car and even wheel me to the clinic in m y wheelchair. when I am done with my appointment I call the front desk lobby and they wheel me back from the clinic to my waiting car at valet and off i go, until next appointment time. - P.J

nothing really to tell, I come in every 3months to get shot in ankle for pain, Dr Scherb gives the shot after a short visit on how my ankle is doing. I tell him I feel at this time my ankle is feeling good not alot of pain and the pain I do have is not so much in my ankle but above it and around and shoots up,he feels that is is because of a nerve in my ankle.Told him I am trying to do without my braces and leather boot as the boot makes my ankle swell and then the ankle hurts more but when I go without I am ok at least so far. I said I may be back in 3 months for my shot and then again I may not it depends on my ankle. - S.P

I know my ankle arthritis is so bad and Dr. Scherb has said that nothing can be done and if I wanted to go to Iowa City and see about ankle replacement that was up to me but I have heard from different people that have gone thru it and they said it was very painful and did not last so why go thru it and at my age I don't need anymore surgeries. Just would like a brace that would hold ankle so bone spurs would not rub or crack every time I walk that is what hurts after a time on my feet. - S.P

Experience was good. I did not expect to have a diagnosis. Most of the time the pain at hand always seems to come from arthritis of one form or another and the instant fix is "we will give you a shot of Cortisone"!Dr Scherb was thoughtful and worked through my issue with the aid of X-rays. I was given a boot to wear, which is turn out to be an impossible task, with the work I do. I have found that if I can sit is certain positions I can diminish the pain. The in clinic wait time was very short. Dr. was very nice and through. Only one SMALL complaint... when I called my pre-operation contact scheduling nurse, I was put on hold and had to leave a message for her to call me back, and she did, however it sometimes took one day after the initial call, or 3 days if it was on a Friday. Kyla Ryan PA is the best., he goes above and beyond!The male nurse I think his name is Mike who helped take off and put on a new splint was very kind and caring. Some of the staff just came in and did what they needed to do. If you have a new nurse with you it helps to explain to them what to do not just do it. I am not sure why myself has to move more or change my position to be worked on just because you as the staff members chair won’t adjust. You adjust. Please use sanitary hand sanitizer when coming into the room and leaving too. We watch even if you don’t think we are. - K.R

The only problem that I had with Dr Scherb was that he didn't keep me comfortable after surgery. I wasn't given the pain medicine needed and suffered until the next morning before I finally was given enough medicine to make me comfortable. I felt like I was going insane from pain! I told the nurses this constantly! I had made a point of telling Dr Scherb before surgery that I have an extremely low pain tolerance, so I thought he would have taken all of that into consideration. I've had many surgeries...this was the only time this had happened. He told me he had a problem with giving opiates because people abuse them, but there's a huge difference in keeping your patient comfortable, and someone abusing pills. As far as my hip replacement, I couldn't be happier. My incision looks great, and I'm getting along wonderfully. He did an excellent job! But the pain!I also had a real problem with the social services woman. I had already spoken with the Osage, Ia, Mitchell County Hospital staff about getting into the Swing bed unit after my surgery since I live alone...my Dr. had given me her number and suggested I do so. I was in Mason City hospital for 2.5 days, and both the first and second day she would come in and mouth off to me. The first time telling me that "just because you want to get into swing bed doesn't mean you're going to. You will probably get sent home. This was a same day surgery" in a terribly snotty voice and attitude. I even asked the nurse after she left if she seemed snotty, and she said" Yes, that's not the word I'd even use". Second day same thing.I was never so happy to hear that I was going to the Osage, Ia. hospital and getting the hell out of that Orthopedic ward. The whole experience has left me never wanting to return to that ward again, ever! I'm afraid that I need my other hip replaced, and now am afraid to go to Mason City simply because of how I was treated this time. A year before I was in the hospital in MC. and received excellent care and kept extremely comfortable in the OB/GYN ward. The nurses were so nice! This visit to Orthopedics was a nightmare! - S.R

“My experience was amazing with Dr. Scherb due to 4000 pound piece of I-Beam of steel falling from a loading table onto my foot. Everyone of my medical team were very interested in my physical and mental comfort. Everything was well explained dealing with broken toes and an open wound. I never was made to feel that caring for me was a burden. I had no reluctance to ask for what I needed. My wife asked questions to see how she could provide at home care for me as well. He kindly answered her questions. Dr. Scherb listen to her concerns for me. On top of that my medical situation has been a long haul as we deal with the open wound. However, such a trauma injury takes time to heal. I will refer my family and friends to Dr. Scherb whom have orthopedic health care needs. The staff were all very friendly. They explained in detail what would be happening. They also helped calm my nerves. I remember waking up in the recovery room, and the sweetest nurse fed me ice chips. I was then transferred to a different room while I waited to be discharged. My medication was delivered to me before I even left, so I didn't have to go out to a store and pick it up. Also, my assigned nurse was honestly the sweetest. She kept going out and getting me pudding cups, granola bars, and more ice chips. She even came back with socks big enough to cover my huge cast, which was a blessing because it's winter. My overall experience was amazing. I highly recommend. - B.S

The scheduling was adequate, and the wait time good. I did not have to wait long for the doctor. I asked for a shot of Hydrochortezone and the Dr. agreed with my request. The nurse prepared the site but the doctor did not wait for the numbing agent to work. He gave me the shot immediately. I felt he rushed the process. I jumped as I was not prepared for the injection. I am not sure I received all of the medication for if some of it was wasted due to my reaction. The knee has been some better however not completely without pain. - A.K

My experience was same as every time I come in for a shot,schedule me shot very easy, sign in went the same easy and polite, wait time not long at all, nurse called and she was very polite took me to room took what info she needed for Dr. and then told me what I needed to do and then went to get Dr., was a very busy day so was little wait for him but not bad, he came in check out my ankle again talked to me about it since I had not been in for 6 months and decided to go ahead with the shot and nurse went and got the stuff came back and he informed what he was going to do and I had my shot he said he would wait on me that again it was to me if I wanted to come back for another shot but I would have to wait 3 months. It is only when my ankle gets to hurting so bad that my brace, and advil don't help that I have been coming back. We have talked about ankle replacement and since they don't last longer than 10 yrs. I really not sure that I want to go thru with all the pain and I know I would have to go to either Rochester or Iowa City, so we have talked about and my husband was also involved in the talks and he goes along with the decision for now. - S.P

I returned to Dr Scherb because I was experiencing pain in my hips and legs. This is an ongoing problem. The last time I saw him, he injected me in both hips. One side felt better but the other side continued to cause pain so I decided another shot would be good. Dr Scherb gave me an injection in both hips again. As of today, the pain is almost non-existent although I still experience some occasional twinges. - T.P

I explained my pains to my rheumatologist and asked for xrays. I was referred to orthopedist. He examined me and made a decision that my pain was osteoarthritis and come back when pain was unbearable. My previous fractures were healed. I think Dr Scherb is a very competent Ortho. Sometimes we patience want are illnesses to hurry up and heal, but sometimes that's not possible or practical. I am doing everything that I was told to do and my foot does feel some better, however I know it's going to take a long time to heal up because of my diabetes. My physician, Dr Bryon Carlson, suggested on September 12, referred me to Dr Scherb. Dr Carlson's nurse called Mason City and set up the appointment. I was surprised it was on Friday. I expected a longer wait. We arrived prior to our appointment, checked in quickly, and waited to be called. I was accompanied to a room and the nurse asked me questions and wanted to know my questions. That took about 5 minutes and then she said Dr Scherb would be in soon. When Dr Scherb arrived, he introduced himself to my wife and me. He then asked me questions about why I was there and where my pain was. He looked at the x-rays, and then did some mobility tests. He then explained what he thought was the problem, talked about options, and then referred me to Neurology. He explained why and ordered an MRI. His nurse set up the appointment with Neurology and he wished me well and left. I felt he was personable and efficient. - T.P
